The Veterans Law Center (VLC) is a free walk-in legal clinic to serve low-income veterans and their families.  Brief legal advice, information and referrals on a variety of civil legal matters are provided by volunteer lawyers, paralegals and law students. Additionally, staff from the Dane County Veterans Service Office provides information about military benefits and other resources available to veterans.

The University of Wisconsin Law School Pro Bono Program, in partnership with the Dane County Bar Association, and the Dane County Veterans Service Office developed the Veterans law center in 2011. Funding is provided by Habush, Habush & Rottier S.C., Porchlight, Inc., the State Bar of Wisconsin, Epic and Zion Lutheran Church.

Having a central resource for veterans seeking legal assistance helps alleviate the challenges faced by local veterans. Fewer veterans miss out on receiving quality legal information simply because they are not sure where to go for help. VLC serves as this central resource and it consistently provides accurate legal information for veterans in need.

VLC provides brief legal advice, information and referrals on a wide variety of civil legal matters on a walk in basis. Volunteer attorneys, paralegals and law students at VLC do:

  • Help identify the proper course of action in a legal matter
  • Explain court rules and procedures
  • Assist with the completion of court forms
  • Provide referrals to alternative legal resources when appropriate

The VLC does NOT provide services (but may be able to suggest appropriate referrals) in the following areas:

  • DUIs
  • Criminal matters
