Departmental VPN (Mac) - Downloading and Installing the Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client

NOTE: Users of Mac OS 10.8 (Mountain Lion) may receive error messages when installing applications from sources other than the Mac App Store. For more information about this issue, please see this document.

This document describes how to download and install the Departmental VPN AnyConnect client on OSX 10.5 and newer.

Note: you must have Java v1.4 or higher installed on your system otherwise you will be given a download link for manual install. Also, make sure you are not connected to another VPN during the installation process.
  1. Point a web browser to the Departmental VPN AnyConnect Page https://vpn.wisc.edu/

  2. The page is divided into three campus regions (East, West, and Central) with an additional section for WiscVPN connections. Look for your department name under the appropriate campus region.

    • If you do not see your department listed, then your department may not have opted for a departmental VPN connection or may not be eligible. Contact your department's network administrator if you would like to request a departmental VPN connection.

    • If your department has more than one connection type available, contact your network administrator to find out which connection type is appropriate for the type of access you need.

  3. Log in with your departmental login credentials. Your NetID will only work for the WiscVPN connections listed at the bottom of the page.

  4. Once you have logged in, the AnyConnect client will begin downloading automatically after a 30 second delay. Click Start now to begin downloading and installing the client immediately.

    • Note: If the web installation fails for any reason, you will be presented with a link to the installer file for your operating system. Click on this link, then follow the instructions to complete the installation offline.

  5. Once the installer is finished, it will immediately connect you to your department VPN server automatically. The following Cisco AnyConnect icon will appear in your menu bar:

AnyConnect icon (white, blue, and green circle with pad lock

You should also briefly see a successful connection message on the right-hand side of your screen, which will look like:

Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client - Connected: UW Dept VPN (central campus)

  6. You can disconnect from Departmental VPN by clicking the icon and choosing Disconnect.
