D2L - Attaching a rubric to an assignment or grade (UW-Madison)

UW-Madison is adopting Canvas as the single, centrally supported learning management system, and discontinuing support for Desire2Learn (D2L) and Moodle. Access to D2L and Moodle will permanently end June 1, 2018. For information about retaining materials from D2L or Moodle, please refer to this document.

Rubrics can be attached to activity or grade item by clicking the Add Rubric button.

Grades can be directly reported to the gradebook through rubrics for these activities:

  • Dropbox
  • Discussions (However, students will not be able to see the feedback.  The rubric will only be a grading tool for the grader).
  • Grades (any type, including text)
  • ePortfolio
Rubrics can be added to these items, but only for grader reference.  Grades cannot be directly reported to the gradebook and students will not be able to access the feedback.
  • Quiz, and Survey
A rubric can be attached to any item that includes the Add Rubric button by either choosing an existing rubric creating a new rubric. (see Creating and Editing a Rubric).

Important: if the rubric does not appear, recall that it must be published be used for grading. An unpublished rubric can be edited under Edit Course > Rubrics.

Dropbox assignments include an option for the "Default Scoring Rubric." This sets the default rubric used to generate a score for each student, in case multiple rubrics are be used.

If the rubric is going to be used for grading (i.e. the rubric's score should be entered in the gradebook), the point value of the rubric and the grade item should match.

Note that the ePortfolio be accessed through a course Navbar link in order for available rubrics to be displayed.
