Java - Compatible Versions for UW Services

This document lists UW services that require Java SE 8.

Oracle has updated their terms of service to require commercial users purchase a subscription to continue to receive updates for Java SE 8. The applications listed below are licensed for continued use of Java SE 8 without requiring the purchase of a commercial Java SE license. However, if your unit requires the use of Java SE 8 for applications not listed here, you will need to confirm directly with your application's vendor whether they have an agreement in place with Oracle to continue to use Java without a subscription. Alternatively you can transition from Oracle's Java SE distribution, to an open source OpenJDK option.

Note: entries marked with an asterisk (*) require additional configuration before the application will work properly. See Java - Adding Sites to Exceptions List for instructions.

The latest release of Java 8 is available for download from http://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp. If you have a 64-bit version of Windows (which almost all current releases are) download and run the "Windows Offline (64-bit)" installer. After installing Java, you may need to quit and re-launch your browser for the change to take effect.

Before installing, uninstall Oracle's Java.

To install AdoptOpenJDK 8, go to https://adoptopenjdk.net/releases.html?variant=openjdk8&jvmVariant=hotspot. Choose version OpenJDK 8 (LTS) and HotSot JVM, then select the Windows x64 platform to download the installer.  Double-click to run the installer.  Once the AdoptOpenJDK installation is complete, go to https://adoptopenjdk.net/icedtea-web.html to download the IcedTea-Web installer.  Double-click to complete the installation.
