Learn@UW - Quiz Grading

Learn@UW allows you to automatically grade quizzes, review grades before they are posted, or to grade manually. Additionally you may control when students see their scores or quiz answers.

Automatic Grading

To have quiz scores be automatically calculated and entered in the gradebook, students must be allowed to see their score immediately when they are finished with their quiz.

  1. If you have not already done so, set up your gradebook (see Learn@UW - Grades Setup Wizard for assistance).
  2. Click on the particular quiz you wish to be automatically graded. Under the Assessment tab, select the corresponding Grade Item from the dropdown menu.
  3. Check both "allow automatic export to grades" and "allow attempt score to be seen immediately upon completion."
  4. Click Save and Close.

Review Grades

It is also possible to review student performance before releasing scores.

  1. When first creating the quiz, on the quiz Assessment tab, leave the box "allow attempt score to be seen immediately upon completion" unchecked.
  2. After students have completed the quiz, click on the arrow next to the quiz name and choose Grade from the dropdown menu:
    Gradedropdown.png
You will see a list of each student's quiz attempt(s) and scores.
  3. To see an individual student's answers, or to change their score, click on the attempt you wish to edit (for example, "attempt 1").
    1. To edit an individual question, edit the Score for that question and click Save.
    2. To edit a final score, enter the new score in Final Score and click Save.

Note: For students to see their scores, it is essential that an Overall Grade be calculated.

Students can view quiz results via "Submission views" (see the related documents).

Quiz Scores and the Gradebook

Quiz scores may be automatically entered in the gradebook after the instructor reviews student scores. After review, scores are exported to the gradebook by checking the "Graded" box on the individual attempt screen, or on the grading summary screen.

To review grades before they are exported to the gradebook:

  1. In the quiz Assessment tab, select the Grade Item from the dropdown menu. You may check "allow attempt score to be seen immediately upon completion" if desired.
  2. After students have completed the quiz, click on the arrow next to the quiz name and choose Grade from the dropdown menu Gradedropdown.png. You will see a list of each student's quiz attempt(s) and scores (to change student scores, see step 3 under "Review Grades").
  3. Important: to export the scores to the gradebook and to reveal student scores, it is essential that an Overall Grade be calculated.
    1. If "allow attempt score to be seen immediately upon completion" was not checked, check the box next to each attempt on the far right and click the icon next to Graded GradedIcon.png. Then click Updated.
    2. Once a score appears in each student's Overall Grade, students will be able to see their grades in the gradebook. Note that the one-way export occurs when the "graded" box is checked - if a quiz grade is changed, the box will need to be unchecked and rechecked.

Clearing Uncompleted Attempts

When a student saves answers to a quiz, but does not complete their quiz attempt, the quiz will remain ungraded and at an "in progress" status. Students may clear "in progress" quizzes by re-entering the quiz and following the Submit Quiz process, or course instructors can submit a student's quiz after quiz deadlines have passed using this process:

  1. Click on the arrow next to the quiz name and chose Grade from the dropdown menu Gradedropdown.png.
  2. Make sure View By is set to User. Select All Users from the Restrict to dropdown menu in the Users tab PRestrict.png. Click on the magnifying glass icon next to the search bar Search.png.
  3. Any students with "in progress" quizzes will be labeled as such. To submit a student's quiz, click Impersonate.gif next to the student's attempt.
  4. Click Yes to enter the quiz as the student.
  5. Click Go To Submit Quiz and click Submit Quiz and Yes, Submit Quiz to submit the student's quiz. You will automatically be taken back to the previous Users tab.
