Moodle - Emailing With Groups

UW-Madison is adopting Canvas as the single, centrally supported learning management system, and discontinuing support for Desire2Learn (D2L) and Moodle. Access to D2L and Moodle will permanently end June 1, 2018. For information about retaining materials from D2L or Moodle, please refer to this document.

This article goes over how to email select groups from one course; for example one lab section from the course.

To email using groups the first step is to create groups in your course.  Information on creating groups can be found here.

After groups are properly created follow these steps:

  1. In the Navigation block on the left, find the appropriate course.

  2. Expand the menu for that course, and click on Participants.  You'll see a list of participants, students and instructors, appear in the content area of the page.

  3. At the top of the page there is section called "Separate Groups", select the group you would like to email.  This will cause only users from the selected group to be displayed.

  4. select visible groups to send emails to different groupings

  5. Use the "Select all" button located at the bottom of the page, or click individual Select checkboxes, located at the far right if you would only like to email select students.

  6. Choose Send message from the "With selected users" menu located next to the "Select all" button.

  7. Compose the message in the Message Body area, using the editor to format it.

  8. Click Preview.

  9. If the message looks correct, click Send message.  This will send an email to all users that were selected.
