Office 365 (Outlook 2013) - Client Capabilities

This document provides an overview of a range of functions and behavior when interacting with Office 365 using Outlook 2013. The functionality considered pertains to the Email, Calendaring, and Contacts portions of the Office 365 suite. For a more condensed overview, please see Office 365 - Technical Client Comparison.

Set sharing permissions for entire mailbox This client is capable of performing this action with no issues. There are a large number of sharing levels: Owner, Publishing Editor, Editor, Publishing Author, Author, Nonediting Author, Reviewer, Contributor, None. Each level has varying Read, Write, Delete and "Other" options.
Set sharing permissions for folder(s) This client is capable of performing this action with no issues. See note above for sharing an entire mailbox. Many permission levels.
Interact with a shared mailbox This client is capable of performing this action with no issues. Shared Mailboxes are automatically subscribed to and displayed when logged into an email account that has access.
Interact with a shared folder This client is capable of performing this action with no issues. In order to view a shared folder, you need to must also grant visibility to the parent folder (usually the Mailbox).
Authenticate and send as another user This client is not capable of performing this action. It is not possible to set up a standalone Outgoing server connection. Multiple accounts can be configured, however.
Send on behalf of another user (change identities) This client is capable of performing this action with no issues. You can change your "From" address, provided you have appropriate permissions. It will send the message as "[you] on behalf of [other user]". Lacking permission, you'll get a bounce email telling you that you can't send on behalf of someone unless you have permission to do so.
Set and modify server-side filters This client is capable of performing this action with no issues. Creating most filters will do so on server-side. Some client-side specific rules will alert you when they are client-side only with a message that says "This rule will only run when you check your email in Outlook. If Outlook isn't running..."

Expand recipients from server-side distribution list This client is capable of performing this action with no issues. Once expanded, the list cannot be compressed. A warning is given notifying the user of this.
Forward email inline This client is capable of performing this action with no issues. This is the default option.
Forward email as attachment This client is capable of performing this action with no issues. The default option for forwarding is to "Forward Inline". To change this setting, it's done by preference, not by individual message. Select File -> Mail -> Replies and forwards and change the "When replying to/forwarding a message" option.
View full headers of a message This client is capable of performing this action with no issues. To see full headers, open the message in a new window, click File -> Info -> Properties. Headers are listed under "Internet headers"
Export email (to import elsewhere) This client is capable of performing this action with no issues. You can export mail as a PST file which is obviously useful for Outlook and certain third party apps that can handle PSTs, or you can export as a CSV.
Detach attachments from email messages This client is capable of performing this action with no issues.
Set tags, flags, or categories on email This client is capable of performing this action with no issues. Outlook 2013 allows you to "Categorize" emails with default color categories that can be renamed. You can also flag them for "Follow Up", which allows you to add notifications to your calendar or set reminders.
Print a message This client is capable of performing this action with no issues.
Auto-complete email addresses from server Global Address List This client is capable of performing this action with no issues.
Auto-complete email addresses from server Personal Address Book This client is capable of performing this action with no issues. The Personal Address Book is synced with the cloud by default as well.
Auto-complete email addresses from local Personal Address Book This client is capable of performing this action with no issues. See note above; local address book is automatically synced to the cloud.
Recover deleted emails from Deleted Items This client is capable of performing this action with no issues. Recover from deleted items by going to the Deleted Items folder, choosing Folder from the menu tab, and clicking Recover Deleted Items
View emails in threaded or conversation view This client is capable of performing this action with no issues. You can change one folder or the entire Mailbox to "Conversation" view.
Set reminder on email messages This client is capable of performing this action with no issues.
Create an event from an email message It is not possible to perform these functions.
Use a Digital ID to digitally sign an email This has not yet been tested.
Set a priority on an email message This client is capable of performing this action with no issues. When composing, you can set the message for follow up, or set high/low importance.
Send as alternate address This client is capable of performing this action with no issues.

Calendar Functions Yes/No Notes
Configure for access This client is capable of performing this action with no issues. Calendars are automatically configured to access the cloud via MAPI when email account is configured.
Create a meeting/appointment/event This client is capable of performing this action with no issues.
Modify or delete an event that you created This client is capable of performing this action with no issues.

Modifications to event by organizer overwrite modifications by attendee(s) It is not possible to perform these functions.

Provide attendance response to single instances of recurring events This client is capable of performing this action with no issues.
Provide attendance responses to all instances of recurring events This client is capable of performing this action with no issues.
Check schedule availability of another user This client is capable of performing this action with no issues. The Check Availability feature is called "Scheduling Assistant". It works within the system and will assist in finding available times for meetings.
Create a new calendar This client is capable of performing this action with no issues.
Delete an existing calendar This client is capable of performing this action with no issues.
Display multiple calendars in one view This client is capable of performing this action with no issues. Calendars can be viewed side-by-side or overlaid, so all calendars overlap in a "group" view.
Change calendar views (e.g. daily, weekly) This client is capable of performing this action with no issues.
Change calendar colors This client is capable of performing this action with no issues. There are 9 colors available to select from.
Set default calendar view This client is capable of performing this action with no issues.
Show or hide declined events It is not possible to perform these functions. When a meeting is declined, it is deleted from your calendar. The only way to show the meeting again is to find the invitation in your Deleted Items (mail) and change your response. It is not possible to display declined events.
Set popup notifications for events This client is capable of performing this action with no issues.
Set email notifications for events It is not possible to perform these functions.
Set other calendar options or preferences This client is capable of performing this action with no issues.
Set sharing permissions for calendars This client is capable of performing this action with no issues. Sharing and privacy settings are rolled into a very granular set of options that can be individually enabled or disabled for individuals or all other users.

Create events with limited visibility (e.g. show date and time only) This client is capable of performing this action with no issues. Default event visibility is "normal". Events can be set to "private".
Subscribe to shared Office 365 calendars This client is capable of performing this action with no issues. Shared Calendars are automatically subscribed to and displayed when logged into an account that has access.
Subscribe to external .ics calendars This client is capable of performing this action with no issues. Subscribed external calendar locations are stored in the cloud, so subscribing to an external calendar in Outlook 2013 makes that same calendar available in other compatible clients, like Outlook on the web.
Remove a subscribed calendar This client is capable of performing this action with no issues.
Invite/schedule a resource (conference room, projector, equipment, etc) These functions are untested.
Create an event on behalf of a resource These functions are untested.
Set sharing permissions for a resource These functions are untested.
Set privacy permissions for a resource These functions are untested.
Print calendars or events This client is capable of performing this action with no issues.
Manage attachments on events This client is capable of performing this action with no issues.

Contacts Functions Yes/No Notes

View and use the Global Address List (GAL) This client is capable of performing this action with no issues.
Create a personal contact stored on the server This client is capable of performing this action with no issues. It is actually not possible to create a local-only contact. All contacts are synced with the cloud.
Modify a contact stored on the server This client is capable of performing this action with no issues.
Delete a contact stored on the server This client is capable of performing this action with no issues.
Create and modify local contacts There are some limitations with this action. As soon as the account is taken online, local contacts are synced to the cloud.
Auto-complete addresses from contacts This client is capable of performing this action with no issues.
Create server-side distribution list It is not possible to perform these functions. It is not possible to create a global distribution list, but you can modify existing ones that you have access to. See below.
Modify server-side distribution list There are some limitations with this action. Outlook will allow you to add members to a global distribution list that you own, but you cannot change other features, such as add owners or change the name.
