Learn@UW - Issue with Keyboard Arrows Answering Multiple-Choice, True-False or Lickert Survey Questions

While taking a survey using Internet Explorer or Firefox, if you answer a Multiple-Choice, True-False, or Likert question and press an arrow key on the keyboard intending to scroll, your answer is changed unless you Saved the survey or clicked your mouse elsewhere in the survey before pressing an arrow key.

Instead of scrolling the Survey window, the unexpected behavior is the following:

  • For Multiple-Choice or True-False questions, the arrow keys cycle through the answers.
  • For Likert questions, the arrow keys cycle through the answers for the row that you most recently entered a response.

Before you Save the survey or click your mouse elsewhere in the survey, you will also see a small dashed box around your selection.  For example:

Multiple Choice
Likert

If you press an arrow key while the dashed box is displayed, the answer will be changed.

The problem does not occur if using Chrome or Safari.

This is a known issue.

It is recommended that you remember to click your mouse elsewhere in the survey after answering a question and making sure your intended answer has been selected.  You should also remember to periodically Save surveys.
