D2L - Student Cannot Access Minibar Alerts While Quiz is in Progress (UW-Madison)

UW-Madison is adopting Canvas as the single, centrally supported learning management system, and discontinuing support for Desire2Learn (D2L) and Moodle. Access to D2L and Moodle will permanently end June 1, 2018. For information about retaining materials from D2L or Moodle, please refer to this document.

For some quizzes students have in progress, the student will not be able to access D2L "minibar" update alerts until they have submitted the quiz (alerts are the red dots that appear in the top right area of the screen when something new happens, such as a news posting).

In these cases, the instructor has enabled the following setting in the quiz setup "Properties" tab:

Optional Advanced Properties > "Do not allow users to send or receive IM messages or view alerts while taking this quiz"

This setting is designed to prevent students from collaborating via the IM function in D2L while taking a quiz; however, it also blocks users from receiving minibar alerts about things such as new news postings.

After the student completes (submits) the quiz, or if the quiz deadline is reached, the student will again be able to access minibar update alerts.

For quizzes that are available for a extended amount of time, it's recommended the instructor disable this setting so that students are able to access their update alerts while in the process of taking the quiz.
