Faculty meetings and skype

Useful things to know about Skype

  • Free to connect to the dean's office account for a faculty meeting (just need an email address to create a personal Skype account).
  • Sound will be better than a conference phone
  • Plan to be 30 minutes early and in a dedicated spot (not roaming) with Skyping computer.
  • Requires a reasonable network connection, may not work from all hotels and coffee shops.
  • Won't have to periodically ask if you are still there, Skype will show us connected/disconnected
  • Need a mic
    • should mute self if in a noisy environment
    • almost every current generation laptop will have a mic and a small webcam built in
    • can also use a desktop computer with an add on / external web cam
  • Don't need a camera
    • can mute local camera
    • almost every current generation laptop will have a mic and a small webcam built in

  • Will be able to see video from faculty meeting
    • will be taken from the front of the room (not everyone will be visible)
  • Contact Theresa to request Skype for the faculty meetings.
    • Tech requests that if possible schedule to have tech review your computer's settings prior to first use
    • Wired connection preferable (may not work on all coffee shop and hotel wireless)
    • Will not work well on 3g/4g (be static, not roaming)
    • 30 minutes early to meeting for connection verification and possible troubleshooting
