Moodle - Description of Roles


UW-Madison is adopting Canvas as the single, centrally supported learning management system, and discontinuing support for Desire2Learn (D2L) and Moodle. Access to D2L and Moodle will permanently end June 1, 2018. For information about retaining materials from D2L or Moodle, please refer to this document.

This table explains the different roles Moodle offers to be assigned to users.

This is used for students who have elected to place a FERPA hold on their name.

Invited GuestGuests have minimal privileges and usually can not enter text anywhere.None
Identical permissions to guest, but is an assignable role.
GraderGraders can grade students, participate in the class, and moderate student content, but may not alter activities.NoneStudent,Guest

TutorTutors can see course content (including hidden items) but have no access to student data. They do not participate in courses.None

Accessibility SpecialistAccessibility Specialists can see all course content, including hidden items and sections, but have limited access to student data. They do not participate in courses. This role is similar to the tutor role but additionally allows access to hidden sections, forums, and access to courses before they are available to students. None

AdvisorAdvisors can see course contents as a guest and can view the grades and course reports for all students. They do not participate in courses.None

Content EditorContent editors can do anything an instructor can do. They usually do not participate in courses.Same as instructorSame as instructor
Content Editor, no gradesThis role has the same ability to edit course contents as an instructor, but is not allowed to see student grades or work. Note: Due to limitations in the moodle permission system, there are some areas in which student work and grades are still visible to this role. Known limitations include:
  • Student-created glossary entries are visible, including the contributor's name.
  • i>Clicker block registrations are visible, if used in the class.
