Learn@UW - Number of Characters Allowed in File and Folder Names

This document describes the character limits for folder and file names. This applies to all tools in Learn@UW where files and folders may be uploaded or created: for example, the Dropbox and Locker tools.

In Learn@UW, folder names are limited to 50 characters and file names are limited to 128 characters

Items with names exceeding these length limits will cause functionality failures and errors.

The limits apply to all situations where files and folders may be uploaded or created, including:
  • Creating course content
  • Copying course components
  • Importing a course
  • Saving dropbox files or dropbox feedback
  • Saving locker files
  • Creating ePortfolio content
Users are encouraged to use short file and folder names, particularly when nesting folders (placing one folder inside another).

Refer to Learn@UW - Troubleshooting Problems when Accessing Files from the Locker if you are experiencing problems accessing files from your locker or Learn@UW - Troubleshooting Problems when Accessing Files from a Dropbox Folder if you are experiencing problems accessing files from a dropbox folder.
