Educational Innovation

Interim Chancellor David Ward is encouraging the campus to develop creative approaches to education and research. If a unit develops an innovation related to a new program or a program change, please mindful that the proposal likely will require governance approval. Thus, it is important for units to consult with representatives from their school/college, the Graduate School, the Provost's Office, and the Division of Continuing Studies as appropriate. Beyond feedback for the proposal itself, these representatives can provide guidance on the governance approval process and deadlines. Please find some helpful links below:

Graduate Query Library: Spring Survey and Summer Workgroup

Background: Last summer the Graduate School revived efforts to improve and add to the collection of graduate-related queries in the Query Library. A Query Library workgroup was formed which includes Query Library staff, Graduate School staff, and Graduate Program Coordinators. The Graduate Query Library initiative is planned again for this summer. Given competing priorities and the collaborative work of the group, it was too difficult to sustain the momentum during the academic year. Please read other data news items below for "behind-the-scenes" work done to further assist Query Library development.

Future Directions: To further enhance the group's process and the usefulness of the Query Library for everyone, the Graduate School is developing a survey to send to all Graduate Program Coordinators to better understand your data needs/wants.  We hope to send this survey in late April or early May.

Summer Workgroup: We will review the results of the survey in order to help guide future query development/review as well as work towards closure on any other query projects in progress. All current members will be invited to participate and new members are always welcome. Meetings will start be May-August on Thursday afternoons every other week; attendance is not required for every meeting. If you are interested in participating, please contact Kelly Haslam at haslam@grad.wisc.edu or Mary Butler Ravneberg at ravneberg@grad.wisc.edu.

Updating Program Information

Just as a reminder, please check your program directory for accuracy and to make changes if necessary. The site is used by different units within the Graduate School, as well as across campus, as a way to communicate with individual or multiple programs. This site lists program "roles" the names of the person(s) in that role and their contact information. To view your program directory go to https://admiss.gradsch.wisc.edu/cgi-bin/ctos/mailsys/index.pl Select your program from the list and select "Get Program/Unit information. You will need the "G" code for your program for both the login and password to make changes. You'll find this code in the upper right hand corner of the individual information form. Click on any "role" to bring up a complete list of "role" definitions. If you have questions contact Kathi Matthews-Risley.

If you need to make changes to your program's academic program page on the Graduate School web site, go to http://admiss.gradsch.wisc.edu/cgi-bin/mas.pl. Select your program from the drop down list and select Update Deadline Info. You do not need a password to make changes here. The Graduate School updates the academic program pages weekly. Check for your changes the week after you've submitted them.

New Program Review Guidelines

This year the Graduate Faculty Executive Committee (GFEC) reviewed updated self-study and program review guidelines for graduate programs. The Provost's Office initiates program reviews and follows the following schedule: new graduate programs are reviewed after five years and all graduate programs are reviewed every ten years. To see where your program is on the schedule, please review the schedules on the Academic Planning and Analysis website (see below).  If you don't see a scheduled review listed, anticipate that you will have one 10 years from your last one if you are an existing program or in 5 years if you are a new program.

Advisors Assignments in ISIS

As a reminder, all graduate students are required to have an advisor assigned and indicated in ISIS. Advisors play a pivotal role in the success of graduate students. From a functional standpoint, we require the advisor approval on important requests like course change form and degree warrants, and advisor appeals are essential for late enrollment, exceptions to deadlines, and more. We ask that you ensure that all graduate students in your program have advisors and that those advisor assignments are entered in ISIS.  There is an ISIS Managing Advisor Assignments Class on 5/22/12, 9-11 am. Register at www.isis.wisc.edu, ‘Training’.

Reminder:  Data Resources and Tools

There is new and developing Graduate School webpage with many helpful data-related links, including programmatic information (like the new graduate program profiles), various campus data collections and tools, and external data resources:  http://www.grad.wisc.edu/education/acadassess/datarestools.html. Data News:  Dataview Testing for Dual Degrees/Careers

As a result of Data Integrity Group (DIG) discussions, the campus has put some adjusted dataviews in the Data Warehouse test environment in order to test the elimination of a "career" restriction and to add the "career" field to some select dataviews. The Graduate School was vocal about the need for dual degree/career data in the Data Warehouse, and if testing goes well, this would allow graduate students enrolled in dual degrees/careers to be queried for the first time in the Data Warehouse. This could have benefits for both the Query Library and the Graduate Program Profiles. Testing could take a few months or several depending on functionality. Is There Something for Nothing? Rights and Responsibilities in Academic Research

Publications are the “coin of the realm” in academia, and scholarly research is a central part of the tenure decision. The stress placed on young academics to publish (and, therefore, not perish) is very high. This presentation will focus on issues related to academic publishing, including the pressure to publish, quantity vs. quality in research output, the temptation to submit work quickly (and the problems that may arise from this), integrity in research, and the benefits and drawbacks of co-authorship. These issues are related to broader challenges facing new professors, such as the role of mentoring, balancing competing demands from your job, dealing with rejection, and balancing your job and the rest of your life. The presentation will draw from the humorous academic novel Something for Nothing that tells the story of a young academic who faces particular challenges with his research during his first year as a professor.

Presenter: Michael W. Klein is the William L. Clayton Professor of International Economic Affairs at the Fletcher School, Tufts University.  From June 2010 to December 2011 he served as Chief Economist in the Office of International Affairs at the U.S. Treasury.  He is also author of the 2011 novel Something for Nothing.

UW-Madison Resources for Starting a New Business

This seminar introduces the Entrepreneur’s Resource Clinic (ERC) space in the Town Center of the Wisconsin Institutes of Discovery. This seminar describes the various UW and community resources for starting a new business or non-profit venture. Materials presented are relevant to faculty, staff, students, alumni or members of the greater Madison community. Topics include a snapshot of the role UW-Madison startups have played in the Madison area, considerations in forming a company, university policy on outside activities and conflict of interest as they relate to startup participation, defining product features, identifying customers and markets, and assembling the people and resources needed to build a business. TED, Known for Idea Talks, Releases Educational Videos

The nonprofit group called TED, known for streaming 18-minute video lectures about big ideas, has opened a new YouTube channel designed for teachers and professors, with videos that are even shorter. Click here for more.

**Window Period: This is the time between the end of one degree period and the beginning of the next. If you were registered in the previous semester and all degree requirements were met by the end of the window period, your degree will be granted at the end of the next semester and you will not have to register or pay fees for the next semester.

Anthony Wilder is our newest student hourly.  He works with Al Joranlien and Pat O'Callaghan at the front desk in 217 Bascom.

Grad IT welcomes two new employees to their ranks: Greg Kietsche and Yuhong Wang.  Greg and Yuhong will be joining the software development and support team.
