EAD Best Practices: Flexibility

This document contains the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Education's Equity and Diversity Committee's best practices on employee flexibility.

How can I provide more flexibility for employees?

•Provide flexibility which allows individuals to work around personal conflicts during the workday. (A3RI)

• Endowment funds at UW Foundation allowed two staff members to increase their time from 50% to 85% during busy seasons. (ARBOR)

• Office climate improved when staff found that some managers were going to be flexible on implementing office policies. In addition, these managers encouraged staff participation in making department policy: when discussing a policy of vacation requests, each Communications staff member was able to make suggestions and the final policy was approved by all staff members. (ASC)

• Offering more flexibility in percentage of appointment on a academic staff position description, attracted a wider range of applicants, allowing staff to accommodate family needs. (ASC)

• Suggestions referred to PSL Council: flexible hours; improve non-classified comp time policy. (PSL)

RESULT: According to survey results, more than 95% of employees responding expressed pleasure with the amount of time they can take off for bereavement or to care for other family members, and felt that work meetings are routinely scheduled at times that do not interfere with family responsibilities. (WAISMAN)
