This document gives an overview of Wireless UWNet. It is divided into the following sections:
The UW-Madison wireless network service provides laptop users with fast and convenient access to email and web-based services. It is available in most campus buildings, listed as "UWNet". Users need to select the network and open a web browser to be redirected to the login page. Login with your NetID and password to start using the wireless network.
Wireless UWNet uses secure authentication to protect users' NetIDs and passwords. Login information is secure and protected from harmful threats.
To learn more about Wireless UWNet, please see DoIT's Wireless Informational Site.
The DoIT Help Desk provides support for wireless users who meet the following conditions:
- User has a valid NetID.
- User has a wireless network card. If you do not have a wireless card, they are available from the DoIT Tech Store (265-7469).
- User is in range of a UWNet wireless access point.
The Help Desk provides best efforts support over the phone. If the problem is not resolved, please bring your machine to the Walk-in Help Desk for further troubleshooting. No appointment is needed. Home networks are NOT supported. Please contact either the vendor of your wireless router or your internet service provider for help.
A Wireless UWNet access point is available in most University buildings on campus.
In general, a user will only have to log into "UWNet" networks once per semester. This login should carry over between networks in different buildings.
Additionally, guest access can be achieved one of two ways. If assigned a Guest NetID by a sponsor, it is possible to login to the wireless system directly. This will grant uninterrupted access for the duration of the Guest NetID period (up to 30 days). Guests may also register using a non-NetID email address for 24 hours of wireless access, after which point they must renew their registration.
Please see Wireless UWNet - Types of Access for more details.
