Moodle - Importing and Exporting Questions

This article explains how to import and export questions from the Question Bank in Moodle.

Exporting questions from your question bank

1. First, go to your question bank by clicking the Question bank link under "Course administration" in the "Administration" block.

2. Next, click the Export tab. Choose Moodle XML format since, in most cases, it will retain more of the questions’ features than the other formats. Select the question category that you would like to export using the “Category” drop-down menu and click the Export questions to file button.

3. The file will then be downloaded to your computer.  Save this file to your computer.  The file will also be saved to the \backupdata\quiz folder in your course’s file directory. Click the Continue button to finish the export process and return to your question bank.

Importing questions to the question bank

1. First, go to your question bank by clicking the Question bank link under "Course administration" in the "Administration" block.

2. Next, click the Import tab. Choose the file type you wish to import. Select the question category that you would like to import to using the “Import category” drop-down menu.

3. Import the questions by selecting Choose a file in the "Import questions from file" section and choosing the file you would like to import.

4. Click on Import at the bottom of of the page and the questions will be imported.
