Students can use the MyUW Student Personal Information portlet to enter, update, or delete their preferred name.
Students are eligible to use the Student Personal Information app. Employees (including student employees) can update their information following MyUW Madison - Update Employee Personal Information, and any user with a NetID can update their preferred name following MyUW Madison - Update Preferred Name.
Update Preferred Name
Click Launch full app.
- Click Change to enter or update your Preferred Name. If you already have a Preferred Name and wish to delete it, click Delete. Your Preferred Name will no longer appear in campus systems once the deletion is processed.
- After clicking Change, you can update your Preferred Name in the appropriate text fields.
Note: When updating your preferred last name, only changes to the capitalization, spacing, apostrophes, or hyphens are allowed. Any other changes will result in an error message.

Click "Save" when completed.
A "Change Pending" message will appear on the screen until any changes or deletions have been completed. It may take up to 2 hours for your preferred name to appear across campus systems and up to 48 hours for your preferred name to appear in the campus directory.
If active, firstname.lastname@example.org email addresses will automatically update to reflect your name changes. You can confirm changes or request activation via Wisc Account Administration.
Preferred Name Exceptions and PoliciesYour primary/legal name may still appear alongside your preferred name in some places, such as transcripts or diplomas. If you have any concerns about your primary/legal name appearing or would like to hide your legal name from the campus directory, please contact PreferredName@studentlife.wisc.edu.
Any preferred name that would be generally considered to be an attempt at misrepresentation or fraud, or interpreted as offensive, will be removed by the Office of the Registrar. The student’s displayed name will revert to their default legal name within campus systems.
