Migrating content to a CAE-managed Wordpress vhost

This document describes how to export content from an existing Wordpress site and import to a CAE-managed Wordpress vhost.

Assumptions

  1. The source Wordpress site  has the capability to install the WordPress Importer plugin (or already has it installed)
    http://wordpress.org/plugins/wordpress-importer/
  2. Content within pages and/or posts uses relative URLs (web addresses for links or images) when referring to other content on the same site, rather than absolute URLs
    1. /about-us is a relative URL (this will transfer well from https://www.myoldsite.com to https://www.mynewsite.com)
    2. https://www.myoldsite.com/about-us is an absolute URL (this will point to https://www.myoldsite.com/about-us even after the export/import process)
  3. This process only applies to pages, posts, media, comments, custom fields, categories, tags, and menus.  Site configuration, such as taglines, permalinks, etc. will need to be set outside of this process.  Content stored in widgets or other plugins will need to rely on mechanisms in those individual widgets/plugins.

Steps

Export

  1. In your source Wordpress site, enable the Wordpress Importer plugin (if it hasn't already been activated)
    - Go to Plugins, then click Activate under Wordpress Importer
  2. Click on Tools => Export
  3. Make sure "All content" is selected and then Download Export File
  4. Save in a location you'll remember (it will have a file extension of .xml)
  5. Wait until the new Wordpress site has imported all media before removing any media from this site

Import

  1. In your destination Wordpress site, enable the Wordpress Importer plugin (if it hasn't been already)
    - Go to Plugins, then click Activate under Wordpress Importer
  2. In your destination WordPress site, enable the theme and all plugins you had on the source WordPress site.
  3. Click on Tools => Import
  4. Click on WordPress
  5. Click Choose File and select the .xml file exported above.
  6. Click "Upload file and import"
  7. Make any changes to content authors and check the "Download and import file attachments"
  8. Click Submit
