UW Digital ID (One-Time Password) - Remote Credentialing

This document summarizes how to credential, then activate / assign a remote customer's OTP request.

There are a few scenarios to consider with identity verification of remote customers.

Customer already has a UW Digital ID personal certificate

If the customer already has a UW Digital ID personal certificate, the identity verification portion supplied in the certificate process is satisfactory. You will need to enter the same identity types used in the personal certificate verification.

Please refer to the following KB for credentialing an OTP request: UW Digital ID - LRA - Credentialing Process

Customer is remote most days, but comes to campus on occasion

If the customer can come to campus, then they MUST verify their identity with their campus LRA.

Please refer to the following KB for credentialing an OTP request: UW Digital ID - LRA - Credentialing Process

Customer is always remote and never comes to campus

If the customer never comes to campus, a Public Notary form with ID verification can be used as a substitute.

  1. LRAs are responsible to email the Public Notary form to the remote customer. If the LRA does not have a copy of this form, they can contact UW Digital ID Administration at uwdigitalid@doit.wisc.edu to obtain a copy.

  2. Once the public notary form has been completed and UW Digital ID Administration has received the form, UW Digital ID Administration will credential the OTP request. The LRA will be contacted upon successful credential.

  3. The LRA will log into UW Digital ID and verify that the credential process is complete.

  4. There are separate processes depending on the type of token selected in the request process. Follow the appropriate instructions below for the token type.

    Hardware Token

    1. If a hardware token was selected as the OTP device, the LRA will mail the hardware token to the customer using certified mail (requiring signature).

    2. Upon receipt, the customer will contact the LRA to confirm receipt of the hardware token.

    3. The LRA will contact, either via email or telephone, the customer with the hardware token to obtain the serial number of the token. The LRA will then activate and assign the hardware token to the customer's request by entering the serial number for the hardware token.

    Software / Phone Token

    1. The customer is responsible for downloading and installing the Symantec VIP application on their smart phone. Please refer to the following KB: UW Digital ID - Customer - Requesting a One Time Password (OTP) for Authentication

    2. Upon successful installation, the customer will contact the LRA to confirm installation of the software token.

    3. The LRA will contact, either via email or telephone, the customer with the software token to obtain the serial number of the token. The LRA will then activate and assign the software token to the customer's request by entering the serial number for the software token.
