3270 - Mainframe Secured FTP Required

The DoIT Mainframe, (blue.doit.wisc.edu) no longer accepts unsecured FTP as a protocol.

Why FTPS?

This security measure was taken to minimize the possible risk of exposing restricted and sensitive information while moving files to and from the Mainframe. This secured protocol for file copying, FTPS (aka FTP over SSL), is the only supported FTP mechanism.  SFTP is not supported.

Possible Error Messages

The message one gets for failing to use a secure protocol vary depending on the specific client in use.   In most cases it is error number 534.
SecureFX reports this message:
534 Server requires authentication before command processing

Options for FTPS Clients

There are many options for Client code for desktop users including SecureFX for Windows desktop users:
  1. The DoIT Tech Store can get versions of SecureFX for Mac and Linux if requested.
  2. CURL can do FTPS through the ftp_ssl_connect commands for customers requiring a programmatic solution.

Options for FTPS Server

Server code options include:
  1. VShell by Van Dyke Software
  2. Pure-FTP - an open source option
