English PhD final oral committee membership
After conversation with Martin and several of the other associate deans, we agreed to provide a temporary exception to English regarding the outside member of a doctoral committee. This exception would allow a member from another institution to be considered to be the outside member, regardless of their departmental affiliation at that institution. In other words, a member of the Dept. of English faculty from University Other would fulfill the requirement of an outside member for a student in the English Ph.D. program. This temporary exception is only relevant to English at this time.
The outside member on an English PhD final oral committee can be from another institution, despite the major field.
In conversation with Prof. Susan Bernstein, the DGS of English, I stressed that the preference would be for the outside member to be a UW-Madison faculty member who's tenure home is in a department other than English. However, I told her that we would allow a member from another institution to be considered the outside member, regardless of their departmental affiliation, until GFEC is able to take up the issue of outside member and consider it more fully. English is likely to seek approval for pending committees under this temporary exception, which we should grant.
My goal is to bring all the issues surrounding "outside member" to GFEC some time this academic year for further deliberation and clarification. Martin has agreed, but we will need to balance this with other GFEC items in the upcoming months.
