Microsoft Volume Activation - Converting a Windows Server 2012 Computer From MAK to KMS Activation

This document explains how to convert a Windows Server 2012 computer from MAK activation to KMS activation.

  1. Open PowerShell as Administrator.
  2. chdir to C:\Windows\System32
  3. Replace MAK with KMS Client Setup Key (the key used in the following example is for Windows Server 2012 Standard; others can be found here:

    cscript slmgr.vbs -ipk XC9B7-NBPP2-83J2H-RHMBY-92BT4

    should return:
    Installed product key XC9B7-NBPP2-83J2H-RHMBY-92BT4 successfully.
  4. Specify UW-Madison's KMS server:

    cscript slmgr.vbs -skms

    should return:
    Key Management Service machine name set to successfully.
  5. To verify (may need a restart):

    cscript slmgr.vbs -dlv

    should return something like this, pieces important to this verification in bold:
