ACADEMIC STAFF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT 
AND RECOGNITION COMMITTEE (PDRC) 
ANNUAL REPORT 2007-2008

Professional Development Grants 
Each semester the PDRC reviews and selects proposals for academic staff professional development matching grants. Ongoing funds for these grants are provided by the UW System. In the fall round, 47 grant proposals were reviewed and 34 were funded for a total of $28,836. In the spring round, 28 grant proposals were reviewed and 26 were funded for a total of $22,035. This round had an exceptionally high funding rate due to committee decision to begin to reduce carryover amount from previous rounds. 

Excellence Awards 
Each year the PDRC reviews nominations and selects recipients of UW-Madison academic staff excellence awards. A framed photo of Bascom Hill was presented to each award winner. Provost Farrell provided funding for the framed photos this year. 

The following awards were given to UW-Madison academic staff during a reception hosted by Chancellor Wiley at Memorial Union: 

The Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Research: Independent Investigator 
Kevin W. Eliceiri, Director of Laboratory for Optical and Computational Instrumentation

The Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Research: Critical Support 
Martha McGregor, Researcher, Pathobiological Sciences, School of Veterinary Medicine

The Robert Heideman Award for Excellence in Public Service and Outreach 
Ruth Olson, Associate Director, Center for the Study of Upper Midwestern Cultures

The Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Service to the University 
Yolanda Garza, Assistant Dean of Students

The Wisconsin Alumni Association Awards for Excellence in Leadership: College, School or the Larger University Community 
Sandra Arnn, Assistant Dean and Director of Engineering Career Services, College of Engineering

The Wisconsin Alumni Association Awards for Excellence in Leadership, Individual Unit Level 
Kathleen Henderson, Researcher, John Rankin Laboratory, Department of Population Health Sciences

The Chancellor's Hilldale Award for Excellence in Teaching 
Ieva L. Reich, Assistant Faculty Associate and Senior Lecturer, Department of Chemistry

 

Martha Casey Award for Dedicated Service to the University 
Linda McDonald, Senior Administrative Program Specialist, Department of Anatomy

The Ann Wallace Career Achievement Award 
Kathleen M. Poi, Director (Retired), University Health Services

In addition to UW-Madison excellence awards, the PDRC also reviews nominations for UW-System and Regent awards and selects nominations to forward to UW-System and Regent committees. The following nominations were chosen to be forwarded to UW-System award committees:

Alliant Energy Underkofler Excellence in Teaching Award 
Ieva Reich, Assistant Faculty Associate and Senior Lecturer, Department of Chemistry 

Executive Education Grants 
Through the generosity of the School of Business, significantly reduced-price course enrollment grants are available to academic staff who wish to take courses in the Executive Education Program. This year's recipients and their courses are:

Looking Forward 
The committee looks forward to providing expanded professional development and award information on the new Academic Staff website.

In addition, we will be collaborating with the Office of Human Resource Development to provide information to academic staff about non-traditional professional development opportunities.

Finally, we will be examining how professional development and Executive Education grant proposals and award nominations are distributed across various campus units.
