Office 365 (iOS 7) - Subscribe to an Office 365 calendar or to an external calendar

Best Effort Support Only

This document contains instructions on using a non-Microsoft email client, such as Apple Mail or Thunderbird. Microsoft does not recommend these clients for use with Office 365, and there are often significant limitations in client functionality as a result.

Because of this, the DoIT Help Desk is only able to offer best effort support for these clients, and certain issues may require the use of a Microsoft client in order to be resolved. For more information on Office 365 client support, please see: Office 365 - Which clients/protocols will be supported?.

The following document explains how to subscribe to a ShareURL or external calendar using the iOS Calendar app (iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch).

Note: To subscribe to someone's Office 365 calendar, you will need to use their ShareURL.

Subscribe to a Calendar

Subscribing is done in the iPhone's Settings and not in the iPhone Calendar application.

  1. In Settings tap on Mail, Contacts, Calendars.

    System Preferences icon

    Mail, Contacts, Calendars selection

  2. In the Accounts section tap on Add Account...

    Add Account selection

  3. On the Add Account... display tap on Other.

    Other selection

  4. In the Calendars section tap on Add Subscribed Calendar >

    select Add Subscribed Calendar option

  5. Type or paste in the URL/Address for the calendar you wish to subscribe to (e.g., for a Public Google Calendar ShareURL, you might use https://www.google.com/calendar/ical/examplegmailaddress@gmail.com/public/basic.ics)

Subscription screen, enter url/address with Server field

  6. Tap on Next in the top-right of the Subscription display. You will see Verifying which, if successful, then will return to the Subscription display.

  7. You may receive a warning "Cannot Connect Using SSL Do you want to try setting up the account without SSL?" If you do, confirm that the URL you have entered is correct.

  8. If the Verifying process is successful, enter a name for the subscription. The process uses the URL you entered as the default name (which is not exactly useful).

  9. You should check the other options on the Subscription display, e.g., Remove Alarms and then tap on the Save button at the top-right of the Subscriptions display to return to the Mail, Contacts, Calendars display.

  10. Run the iPhone Calendar application and confirm the subscription is functioning:

    • Tap on Calendars at the bottom-center of the main iPhone Calendar display.
    • Scroll if necessary down to the Subscribed section of the Calendars display and confirm that the new subscription appears and has its view enabled (the checkmark to the left is visible). If not, confirm the subscription in Settings.
    • Tap on Done at the top-right of the Calendars display to return to the main iPhone Calendar display and confirm that you see data on a day that is appropriate for the calendar to which you have subscribed.

Subscribe to ShareURL

See https://calendar.wisc.edu/share/my-shares for more information about ShareURL.

If a WiscCal user has sent to you a read-only ShareURL for their calendar, you can use the same process as above to subscribe to that ShareURL. If the ShareURL is for "All Calendar Data" it is an exact equivalent to granting Calendar Share -> Read privileges to someone from within the WiscMail web client. One difference is that the person sharing with you must send you the ShareURL directly; it will not be revealed from within any client. Features of the ShareURL include options to limit the information the share exposes (e.g., only events marked Show Date and Time Only or Private, etc., see the link above for more information.).

  1. Copy the link itself (e.g., from the text of the email sent to you that notified you of the share).
  2. In Settings tap on Mail, Contacts, Calendars.

    System Preferences icon

    Mail, Contacts, Calendars selection

  3. In the Accounts section tap on Add Account...

    Add Account selection

  4. On the Add Account... display tap on Other.

    Other selection

  5. In the Calendars section tap on Add Subscribed Calendar >

    select Add Subscribed Calendar option

  6. Type or paste in the ShareURL address for the calendar you wish to subscribe to (e.g. you might use "https://calendar.wisc.edu/u/share/abcdefghij123456/dr(-14,14)?ical")

    6

    • Note: ShareURL's must end in ical for email clients such as Outlook, while shareURLs for mobile devices must end in 'mobileconfig'.
    • By logging into the ShareURL Utility and navigating to the Privacy Settings for any ShareURL you can see these settings and more under the Using Your ShareURL heading.
  7. Tap on Next in the top-right of the Subscription display. You will see Verifying which, if successful, then will return to the Subscription display.

  8. You may receive a warning "Cannot Connect Using SSL Do you want to try setting up the account without SSL?" If you do, confirm that the URL you have entered is correct.

  9. If the Verifying process is successful, enter a name for the subscription. The process uses the URL you entered as the default name (which is not exactly useful).

  10. You should check the other options on the Subscription display, e.g., Remove Alarms and then tap on the Save button at the top-right of the Subscriptions display to return to the Mail, Contacts, Calendars display.
