Case Scenario Critical Reader Support Page - Design Resources - Building a Critical Reader (UW-Madison)

Please refrain from developing new CSCR modules. UW-Madison is moving to the Canvas LMS. While CSCR modules can be loaded into Canvas courses, they cannot be connected to the Canvas gradebook. A team from the Teaching and Learning Technology Advisory Group (TLTAG) created a recommendation for alternate tools that you can see here. Members of the transition team would like to meet with you to help you select the solution(s) that best meets your needs to move your content. Please let us know when we can best assist you by completing this form or contact the designated instructional technologist for your school or college.

Jan

Thank you for your interest in creating Critical Reader learning activities. Below are several brief videos where Professor Jan Miernowski explains how to build these activities using the CSCR authoring tool. These include technical as well as pedagogical tips.

Here is an example of a Critical Reader devoted to the novella First Snowfall by Maupassant
  1. Planning the overall architecture of a CR
  2. Organizing a CR introductory page
  3. Attaching a file
  4. Inserting text
  5. Attaching a roll-over explanation to text
  6. Adding a comment (image and audio) to a text section
  7. Linking a comment with a roll-over in the text section
  8. Linking to a URL
  9. Creating a multiple-choice exercise for a text section
  10. Creating a select-all-that-apply exercise for a text section
  11. Creating a fill-in the blank exercise for a text section
  12. Creating a closing content page with a YouTube video
  13. Adding branching/scoring with a report to the instructor

Here is an example of another Critical Reader: Ambroise Pare, Of Animals and the Excellence of Man (1579)
