Learn@UW - Exporting Discussion Posts

If your organization has enabled you to view Discussion topics in Grid View, You can save Discussion posts within a topic in a course by creating a scrolling window of the posts and then either printing to a .pdf file or copying and pasting into a word processor.

If your organization has restricted you to view Discussion topics in Reading View, can can still save threads within a topic in a course by displaying a thread of posts and then either printing to a .pdf file or copying and pasting into a word processor.


Exporting All Posts in a Topic

Follow the procedure below for each Discussion topic from which you want the posts exported.

  1. Go to the Discussions tool.

  2. Click on Settings near the upper-right corner and select Grid View under "Personal Settings" if not already set. 

    Note: If there is no option to do so, your organization has restricted you to view Discussion topics in Reading View and you will not be able to export all posts in a topic.  Refer to Exporting Threads in a Topic below.

  3. Select a topic within a forum.

  4. Change the view to "All Posts" (press the Apply button).

  5. Change the number of posts viewed at a time to the highest possible option; typically, this is 50. If there are more posts than the number viewed at a time, you will have to repeat this procedure for each page to include all posts.

  6. Select the 'Select all rows' box just above the message headings.

  7. Select the "Print" icon.

  8. Steps 3-6

  9. This brings up a scrolling "Printable View" window containing the posts.

    You can do one of the following

    • Select all text and copy and paste into a word processor.
    • Press the Print button and select "Microsoft XPS Document Writer" to save as an .xps file.
    • Press the Print button and select "Adobe PDF" to save as a .pdf file.

Note: The exported file may contain sensitive information such as private student information. Store the file in a secure, password-protected location.


Exporting Threads in a Topic

Follow the procedure below for each thread within a Discussion topic from which you want the posts exported.

  1. Go to the Discussions tool.

  2. Click on Settings near the upper-right corner and select Reading View under "Personal Settings" if not already set. 

    Note: If there is no option to do so, Reading view is automatically in effect because your organization has restricted you to view Discussion topics in Reading View.

  3. Select a topic within a forum.

  4. Select a thread within the topic.

  5. You can do one of the following
    • Select all text in the thread and copy and paste into a word processor.
    • Select Print Thread from the drop-down by the thread's title and then select "Microsoft XPS Document Writer" to save as an .xps file.
    • Select Print Thread from the drop-down by the thread's title and then select "Adobe PDF" to save as a .pdf file.
