Learn@UW - You Should Turn Off "Show friendly HTTP error messages" in Internet Explorer

If you are using Internet Explorer, you should turn off "Show friendly HTTP error messages".

With "Show friendly HTTP error messages" turned on, the following problems may occur:

  • When an error condition arises, various error codes are suppressed that may be useful for diagnosing what happened.
  • Certain types of streaming media content will result in a "page cannot be displayed" error.
  • Viewing a video may possibly result in a "page cannot be displayed" error.
  • Under certain conditions, a "not authorized to view page" error may appear even though you really are authorized to view the page.

To turn "Show friendly HTTP error messages" off in Internet Explorer:

  1. Select Internet Options from the Tools Menu.
  2. Click the Advanced tab.
  3. Under "Browsing", if the box by "Show friendly HTTP error messages" is checked, uncheck it.
  4. Click OK.
