Windows Defender - Protecting your Computer from Malware

Windows defender is a built-in antivirus program made by Microsoft for Windows 8. This document describes how to use Windows Defender as your virus protection. There are three sections. One for updating Windows Defender, one for scanning your computer for malicious software, and one for enabling real-time protection.

Updating Windows Defender

  1. Open the Control Panel. Windows 8 - Accessing the Control Panel
  2. Type defender in the search box, then click Windows Defender.
  3. Go to the Update tab, then click Update. If updates install successfully, it will say Virus Definitions: Up to date.

Scanning your computer

  1. Open the Control Panel. (Windows 8 - Accessing the Control Panel)
  2. Type defender in the search box, then click Windows Defender.
  3. From the Home tab, select Full then click Scan Now. A full scan will generally take 1-2 hours.

Enabling real-time protection

  1. Open the Control Panel. Windows 8 - Accessing the Control Panel
  2. Type defender in the search box, then click Windows Defender.
  3. Go to the Settings tab and click Real-time protection on the left side.
  4. If it is not already selected, select the box next to Turn on real-time protection (recommended) and click Save Changes.
