Bucky Backup Archive - Service Description

This document provides the service description for the Bucky Backup Archive service.

What is Bucky Backup Archive?

Bucky Backup Archive is a managed, low cost data archive solution, which utilizes IBM's Tivoli Storage Manager software. It provides the ability to archive data and retrieve archive data through the TSM client. The data is stored on tape in two locations. Expect slower archive and retrieval times as compared to Bucky Backup Enterprise and Lite.

DoIT provides service management through Bucky Backup administrators.

Storing your data in Bucky Backup Archive is like putting a box of old files in a storage locker. If you need it, you can go get it, but it's not right in your office taking up more valuable space.

What data is suitable for Bucky Backup Archive?

The data you send to Bucky Backup Archive is typically data that you need to keep around for some period of time, but you don't expect to need access to it on a regular basis. Some examples of good candidates for Bucky Backup Archive:

  • Raw research data after the research project is completed
  • Retired applications
  • Completed projects
  • System images of retired servers or desktops

What Bucky Backup Archive is not

Bucky Backup Archive is not intended for day to day backup use.

There are no scheduled backups with Bucky Backup Archive. Archives are typically created manually, but they can also be created using scripts.

Who is eligible to use Bucky Backup Archive?

Universities of Wisconsin Madison faculty, staff, departments, research centers, as well as affiliates, are eligible to use this service. Users must be able to provide billing information through a DoIT number or a UDDS (Invoice).

What is the cost for Bucky Backup Archive?

Bucky Backup Archive is billed monthly. Billing is based on the amount of data stored. There is no charge for input/output activity. The current rate can be found at https://www.doit.wisc.edu/services/backup-bucky-backup/.

Service Availability of Bucky Backup Archive

Bucky Backup Archive is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with a defined weekly maintenance window every Monday afternoon from 1- 3PM. All non-emergency outages will be preceded with an email to all customers and administrators two weeks prior. Emails regarding emergency outages will also be sent with as much notice as possible. If a specific portion of the service has an outage, emails will contain a list of your machines being affected.

Customizing Bucky Backup Archive

Bucky Backup Archive has several retention options to choose from, that are specified at the time of the archive creation. However, if these options do not meet the customer's data storage needs they can request to have a customized retention policy created.

How to get started using Bucky Backup Archive

To register for Bucky Backup, please go to https://buckybackup.doit.wisc.edu/buckyadmin/registration.php.

Once the registration form has been submitted the customer will receive an email confirmation that the node has been registered. Bucky Backup Archive nodes are ready to use immediately after a successful registration.

If Bucky Backup Archive is unavailable, how will customers be informed?

Notifications are sent to all customers and their administrators via email for planned outages and emergency maintenance. Unscheduled outages are posted on the Madison IT Outages site at http://outages.doit.wisc.edu/.

Continuity of Bucky Backup Archive in the event of an emergency or incident

In the event that Bucky Backup Lite is impacted by an incident or emergency every effort will be made to restore service as soon as possible. DoIT has prioritized its services into Tiers in case of emergencies. Bucky Backup Archive has a Tier 4 ranking which is considered a minimal impact on campus operations.
