Learn@UW - Bonus Points Are Not Awarded in Grade Categories

This document explains why bonus points may not be awarded to students when Grades categories are used in the gradebook.

If a Grades category contains bonus items, the following must be set for the category:

Points Gradebook

Check "Can Exceed" in the Grading section. Otherwise, the total number of points awarded for that category can never exceed the total number of 'regular' (non-bonus) points.

Can Exceed

Weighted Gradebook

Check "Allow category grade to exceed category weight" in the Grading section. Otherwise, the total weight awarded for that category can never exceed the total weight for the category.

Also, make sure that "Manually assign weight to items in the category" is selected in order to be able to set weights for any bonus grade items within the category.

Allow category weight to exceed category grade

NOTE: You must assign a non-zero "Weight" value, along with a "Max. Points" value, in each bonus grade item within the category.
