Office 365 (Thunderbird) - Change View settings

Best Effort Support Only

This document contains instructions on using a non-Microsoft email client, such as Apple Mail or Thunderbird. Microsoft does not recommend these clients for use with Office 365, and there are often significant limitations in client functionality as a result.

Because of this, the DoIT Help Desk is only able to offer best effort support for these clients, and certain issues may require the use of a Microsoft client in order to be resolved. For more information on Office 365 client support, please see: Office 365 - Which clients/protocols will be supported?.

Changing the way you view messages and folders in Thunderbird is quick and easy, just follow the steps below.

Change Inbox View
  1. Open Thunderbird
  2. Click the Menu button to the right of the search bar (three horizontal lines)
  3. Select Preferences
  4. From the bottom of the preferences menu, select Layout (For Windows: choose Options menu)
  5. From Layout, your options are:
    • Classic View (default) - Folder Pane on the left and Message Pane on the bottom in roughly equal proportions
    • Wide View - Folder Pane and Inbox list small and Message Pane large across the bottom
    • Vertical View - all Panes vertical and proportional
  6. You can also toggle the Message Pane and the Folder Pane on and off from Layout

Change Messages view to conversations
Note Conversations are where messages in the same thread (replies back and forth) are grouped together in a nested view.
  1. Open Thunderbird
  2. Click the swirl on the top of the message list (For Windows it is a Windows Swirl)
  3. Conversations are now grouped and when you click on a message with a swirl by it, you will see the entire conversation thread nested under the original message of the group
Tip To change back, click the swirl again
