Apple Mail - Export Autofill/Autocomplete

Best Effort Support Only

This document contains instructions on using a non-Microsoft email client, such as Apple Mail or Thunderbird. Microsoft does not recommend these clients for use with Office 365, and there are often significant limitations in client functionality as a result.

Because of this, the DoIT Help Desk is only able to offer best effort support for these clients, and certain issues may require the use of a Microsoft client in order to be resolved. For more information on Office 365 client support, please see: Office 365 - Which clients/protocols will be supported?.

This document will provide guidance on how to export Autofill/Autocomplete contacts' addresses from Apple Mail to a new machine, whether it be a MacBook, iPad, or iPhone. This will allow the user to automatically autofill/populate an email address when composing a new email that is being sent to a previous contact. A list of email addresses can not be extracted from Apple Mail. However you can add email addresses from your Previous Recipients to your contacts.

  1. Open Apple Mail.

    Open Apple Mail

  2. Click Window and then click Previous Recipients.

  3. Choose which email addresses you wish to move to your contacts and click Add to Contacts.

The contacts you saved will now be ready to export from Apple Contacts.  When composing email, previous contacts should now display/autofill when you start typing/entering a name into the To: field.
