EPD - Best Practices - Editing Style Guide: Commas

EPD Best Practices

EPD will follow AP (Associated Press) comma rules, except in the following situation.

Comma use in lists shall include the "serial comma". This is the systematic use of a comma before the and in a list. Such practice assures that every item in the list is seen as a discreet element, not part of a set.

The serial comma consistently delineates all items in a list as separate elements, eliminating the possibility that the last two items in the list are a potential set of two. Using the serial comma makes for absolute clarity in meaning.

PROBLEMATIC: This practice exposes the product to high concentrations of O2, greater changes in temperature and humidity levels and the risk of elevated concentrations of C2H4.

EDITED: This practice exposes the product to high concentrations of O2, greater changes in temperature and humidity levels, and the risk of elevated concentrations of C2H4.

EDITED: Choose from more than 400 continuing education courses in engineering, design, operations, production, maintenance, management, and planning.
