EPD - Best Practices - Editing Style Guide: Percentages and Numbers
EPD Best Practices
1. Do not begin sentences with percentages or numbers unless they are spelled out. Rearrange the sentence instead.
2. In the materials, be consistent on whether the percent symbol (%) is used, the word "percent" is spelled out, or the "per cent" format is used. Use any of these formats, but be consistent in execution.ERROR: 92% of the students were employed within three months.EDITED: Within three months, 92% of the students were employed.
3. Use "2 1/2 - day workshop" instead of "2.5 day workshop". Alternatively, spell it out: thus, "four day workshop" will work well.
4. Spell out numbers "one" through "nine" except when used as a unit of measurement.
