EPD - Best Practices - Editing Style Guide: Percentages and Numbers

EPD Best Practices

1. Do not begin sentences with percentages or numbers unless they are spelled out. Rearrange the sentence instead.
ERROR: 92% of the students were employed within three months.
EDITED: Within three months, 92% of the students were employed.

2. In the materials, be consistent on whether the percent symbol (%) is used, the word "percent" is spelled out, or the "per cent" format is used. Use any of these formats, but be consistent in execution.

3. Use "2 1/2 - day workshop" instead of "2.5 day workshop". Alternatively, spell it out: thus, "four day workshop" will work well.

4. Spell out numbers "one" through "nine" except when used as a unit of measurement.
ERROR: We covered 6 topics in the workshop.
EDITED: We covered six topics in the workshop.
CORRECT: There were 6ml of fluid in the line.
