Office 365 - Using Global Address List and Whitepages for Interoperability
This document will explain what the Global Address List is, what the WhitePages are, and which one you should use when searching for an address with the purpose of email/calendaring.
Global Address List and the WhitePages
The Global Address List is a directory of users within UW-Madison's Office 365 environment.
The WhitePages is a directory of users affiliated with UW-Madison.
Both of these services can be used to look up contact information for users.
Address lookup to change
Currently, the address lookup feature in WiscMail/WiscCal (as well as some other email and calendaring tools in use on campus) pulls data from the UW White Pages. The address lookup feature in Office 365 will use something called the Global Address List (GAL), which will include only email addresses in UW-Madison -- instance of Office 365. The Global Address List in Office 365 will not sync with or search the UW White Pages. Because of this, you will not see a colleague or student -- email address when you search the GAL, unless he or she has already moved to the new system.
As use of Office 365 spreads across campus, those using it may notice when others have moved to Office 365, because their email address will be displayed in the GAL. Those who decide to choose a new primary address at the time of the transition will see the change automatically reflected in the GAL, but will need to manually update their White Pages entry. Although you may be in a habit of using an old/familiar address from your address book or contacts list, it may be advantageous to dispense with old address book/contacts. While it may be helpful to keep an archive of your personal contacts list, know that over time, all of your UW-Madison contacts will be added to the GAL for Office 365 and some of your contacts may be using different email addresses than they did before the transition.
Search the WhitePages for a definitive address to use for email/calendaring.
