Windows - Switching from a Microsoft account to a local account

This document describes the process of switching from a Windows Microsoft account to a standard local user account. Any Windows machine checked in for software troubleshooting must have an admin local user account. If the user has a Microsoft account, Repair will be unable to reset their password.

Caution: Once you switch your machine to a local account, you will not be able to download software from the Windows App Store.

Windows 10

  1. From the Start menu, click Settings.
  2. Windows 10 Start Menu

  3. Click Accounts.
  4. Windows 10 Settings

  5. Under your Microsoft account email address, click Disconnect.
  6. Windows 10 Account Settings

  7. Enter your current user account password and click Next.
  8. Type your current password

  9. Enter a username and password, reenter your password, create a password hint, then click Next.
  10. Enter your new password

  11. Make sure you have saved any current work and click Sign out and finish.
  12. Click Finish

Windows 8

  1. From the Start screen, swipe in from the right edge or place your cursor in the lower-right corner.

  2. Click Settings.
  3. Click Change PC Settings.
  4. Click Accounts.
  5. Under your Microsoft account email address, click Disconnect.
  6. Enter your current user account password and click Next.
  7. Enter a username and password, reenter your password, create a password hint, then click Next.
  8. Make sure you have saved any current work and click Sign out and finish.
