Office 365 (iOS 7) - Using the iOS 7 email and calendar Offline

This document contains instructions on using a non-Microsoft email client, such as Apple Mail or Thunderbird. Microsoft does not recommend these clients for use with Office 365, and there are often significant limitations in client functionality as a result.

Because of this, the DoIT Help Desk is only able to offer best effort support for these clients, and certain issues may require the use of a Microsoft client in order to be resolved. This document describes how to turn your iOS 7 device's data services on or off, and how being offline affects synchronization of calendar and email.

Offline access lets you use email and calendaring functions on your iOS 7 phone or tablet when you're not connected to the Internet. When you do not have a connection to a data source and are offline, you can still work will work and use much of the functionality of the iOS 7 email and calendar as needed. When you're online again, the iOS Mail and Calendar apps will be automatically synced to your Office 365 account when you go back online.

What can I do when I'm offline?

Most tasks that you can do online are available when you're offline. Tasks you can do while offline include but are not limited to:

  • Reading and responding to messages.
  • Sending new messages.
  • Viewing and editing your calendar.
  • Responding to meeting requests.
  • Viewing and editing your contacts.

Anything that you do while offline will be uploaded to the server when you reconnect to a network.

Why would my iOS 7 device be offline?

There are several situations where your iOS 7 device may be offline. This includes:

  • Setting your device to Airplane Mode (i.e., no access to any data sources)
  • Not having access to Wi-Fi (i.e. not at home, in your office or near a public hotspot)
  • Your cellular data provider's network may be out of range or otherwise not available.
  • Your device's Wi-Fi or Cellular Data services are turned off.

How do I turn on/off Airplane Mode, Wi-Fi or Cellular Data access?

If you ever need airplane mode, Wi-Fi or Cellular data access to be turned off, tap on the Settings icon on your iOS 7 device and select the service you want to start or stop.

  • Turn on/off Wi-Fi: tap on the Wi-Fi icon in Settings, then turn it on or off on the page that follows.
  • Turn on/off cellular data: tap on Cellular on the settings page, then tap on the switch labeled Cellular Data in the page that opens.
