WiscList - Using the Content Editor in List Manager
This document provides a walkthrough of the features available in the WiscList List Manager Content interface. WiscList's List Manager also provides an HTML editor to create feature-rich content without prerequisite knowledge of HTML. To begin using the List Manager interface, see WiscList - Advanced List Management (List Manager).
Create New Content
Click Content in the left panel to expand the menu, then click New Content to begin.
Note: You may save your content and return to it in the future by clicking Save. As always it is recommended that you save often to avoid losing your work.
Content Name: An identifier for your content, this will not be reflected in your message
Description: A more detailed identifation tag for your content, this will not be reflected in your message
From, To, Subject: The fields that will be displayed in the email sent to list members
If you'd like to customize the appearance of the fields, click Insert Field to view dropdown menus with the available mail merge fields. For example: Using "%%nameemail%%" in the To field will display the recipient's email address and name (if available) in place of the list name.
If you would like to use the built-in HTML editor, you may begin designing your message right away. If you prefer to write or copy HTML code directly, you must first click Disable HTML Editor.
To insert an image into your mailing, you must host it on a service like UW-Madison Box.
If you use Box.com, you must provide the Direct Link. To obtain this URL in Box.com, click the Share link for the image you wish to use. Ensure the permissions are set to "Anyone with the link", then click the gear icon. In the pop-up menu, expand Direct Link at the bottom to view the URL.
Once you have obtained the URL for the image you would like to share, click in the List Manager HTML Editor.
Enter the URL into the URL field of the Image Properties pop-up menu.
You should also specify an Alternative Text to assist email clients using accessibility features.
Specifying a Width and Height are recommended, but not required for the image to display properly.
You may change the remaining settings if you want to manipulate the way the image is displayed in your content.
When you are satisfied with the settings, click OK to insert the image into your content.
You may specify plain text in this area if you do not wish to add any special formatting to the content.
You may attach a file to the mailing by using the Attach File button.
Note: WiscList imposes a size limit of 5MB for the entire message, including attachments. It is generally preferrable to host attachments on an external hosting service like UW-Madison Box and provide a download link in the email. We recommend that you do not change these settings. Doing so may result in failure to properly display your mailing.
Create a Mailing from Content
Once you are satisfied with your content, click Create Mailing to save and move to the New Mailing page. There you will have the ability to customize the details of your message, including the ability to do a test message and schedule the mailing.
Edit Existing Content
Click Content in the left panel to expand the menu, then click View Content to see a list of saved content. Clicking the content name or Edit will allow you to make changes.
