Learn@UW - Allowing Instructors to Impersonate Students

This document is for Site Administrators only.

This document describes the permissions required to enable instructors to impersonate students in their courses.

The following permission in "Roles and Permissions" in the Users section for instructor role(s) must always be turned on to enable instructors to impersonate students in their courses:

Impersonate 'Student' in the Course Offering column.
Note: 'Student' will appear as the actual name of student role(s) at your campus. If there are multiple student roles at your campus, set this permission for each of these roles, as necessary.

If a student enrolled in a course is enrolled as an instructor in any other courses in the organization, the following permission in the Users section must also be turned on to enable the instructors to impersonate the user as a student in their courses:

Impersonate 'Instructor' in the Course Offering column.
Note: 'Instructor' will appear as the actual name of student role(s) at your campus. If there are multiple instructor roles at your campus, set this permission for each of these roles, as necessary.

If an Instructor reports receiving the message

You do not have sufficient permission to impersonate this user; they are enrolled with a higher access level in other areas of the organization.

then the permission Impersonate 'Instructor' needs to be turned on at the Course Offering level because the student is an instructor of another course in the organization.
