Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack (MDOP)
MDOP is a suite of technologies available as a subscription to Microsoft Software Assurance customers. It is designed to help IT professionals virtualize the user experience, applications, and Windows; manage features within Windows; and restore user productivity after a system issue.
The Microsoft EES (https://kb.wisc.edu/showroom/page.php?id=5084) licenses all UW-Madison users for Windows Software Assurance on their UW-owned computers. That Software Assurance gives UW departments the right to purchase and use licenses for MDOP.
When you purchase MDOP, your department pays for the number of months remaining until the next October 31st anniversary of our EES. DoIT would bill you annually after that. You would be committed to paying for MDOP through the end of the 3-year term of the EES during which you signed up.
Microsoft requires that you license all users in your department. Since the right to buy MDOP derives from our Microsoft EES, Microsoft processes MDOP purchases as amendments to our EES. The EES is based on FTE employees, not devices, so that's the way the number of users in amendments to it are also calculated. This is the formula used to calculate the number of departmental users:
full-time faculty + (part-time faculty ÷ 3) + full-time staff + (part-time staff ÷ 2)
You should include student employees, but not non-employed students. You can also exclude employees who are non-desktop PC users (if any), such as maintenance or food service staff.
