Office 365 (Outlook 2016 for Mac) - About junk e-mail protection

No one likes spam or junk email. The Outlook 2016 for Mac Junk Email Filter doesn't stop delivery of junk email messages, but does the next best thing --- it moves suspected spam to the Junk Email folder.

NOTE: This document applies to Outlook 2016 for Mac, released in late 2015. For information about how to complete this task using the previous version of Outlook available for Mac, see: Office 365 (Outlook 2011) - About junk e-mail protection

Office 365 Team Junk Mail Filtering Recommendation: It is the recommendation of the Office 365 team for users to disable all local client (Outlook, Apple Mail, etc.) automated junk mail filters and local client rules/filters in Office 365. For UW-Madison users, many clients will have local junk mail filtering disabled entirely. All rules/filters should be created in Outlook on the web. Please refer to our Office 365 (Outlook on the web) - Filtering email with inbox and sweep rules document.

We recommend you regularly review messages in the Junk Email folder to check for legitimate messages that were incorrectly classified as junk. If you find a message that isn't junk, drag it back to the Inbox or any folder.

About junk e-mail protection

When the filter finds a message that appears to be junk, Outlook does the following:

  • Moves the message to the junk e-mail folder for that account.

    Junk Email Folder

  • Assigns the message to the junk category.

    Junk Category

  • Blocks any embedded pictures in the message. In some cases, downloading the pictures in a mail message lets the sender know that your mail address is active. If a junk mail sender knows that your address is active, you are more likely to receive additional junk mail from that sender.
