macOS 15 Sequoia - Running Software Update
This document links to Apple Support on obtaining the latest patches for Mac OS X.
If you are uncertain whether your Mac is compatible with macOS 15 Sequoia, look through the following Apple list: Mac Computers Compatible with macOS 15 Sequoia.
Upgrade to macOS 15 Sequoia
- Click on the Apple icon in the upper left corner.
- To skip steps 2-4, you can also use the Spotlight feature in the menu bar to search for, find, and open the Software Update window.
- Select System Settings.
- In the pop-up window, choose General from the menu on left-hand side.
- On the right, click Software Update.
- If new software is available for your computer, you will see an Update button; select this to update your device's OS.
- Note: If no new software is available, the window will read, "Your Mac is up to date."
- Before the installation begins, you will be prompted to enter your administrator password (this is the same password you use to log into your device). Use the following link if you have forgotten your password: How to Reset the Password for Mac Login.
- The software update should then automatically begin. While it is being installed, do not put your Mac to sleep or close the lid.
- During the installation process, your device may restart and/or show a progress bar or blank screen several times. This is normal.
Download and install current or previous OS versions
There are multiple ways to download and install current or previous versions of the Mac operating system on compatible Mac computers: via Software Update, macOS Recovery, the App Store, a web browser, or a bootable installer.
Software Update method:
- To use this method, follow the steps in the previous section entitled "Upgrade to macOS 15 Sequoia."
macOS Recovery method:
- To use this method, open the following link and follow any directions: Reinstall macOS using macOS Recovery.
App Store method:
- To use this method, open the following link and follow any directions: Download and reinstall current or previous OS versions using the App Store.
