This document provides a link to the policy on teaching/research dual role guidelines for academic staff, and explains how the process is handled at L&S for requesting approval of a dual role situation.

Dual role situations are ones in which an individual will perform a mix of teaching and research duties.  A common dual role situation is when an ongoing/renewable Scientist or Researcher requests to teach as a Lecturer in a short-term terminal academic staff appointment. These situations are called “dual role waivers” by the University Committee, since they are a waiver of the limits normally applied to these dual role situations, and they require review/approval by the University Committee (through the Secretary of the Faculty’s Office).  Such appointments require University Committee approval (FPP 1.02.B., FPP 1.03.A., FPP 8.02).

L&S Human Resources will review the request, determine if dual role approval is needed and submit the request to the Secretary of the Faculty’s Office for review and approval by the University Committee.   

Approval may be required even if the appointment is unpaid or teaching independent study or directed study.

Approval is likely not required when the appointment is not the primary instructor (example: Teaching Specialist).  Approval is also likely not required when the appointment is postdoctoral or related to outreach or research and does not publish papers or write grants.
