Office 365 - Handling Duplicate Events

If you are experiencing an issue where events are being duplicated in your calendar (mainly ones that were imported via class schedule process), this document will guide you through steps to help resolve the problem.

IMPORTANT: 3/2/2015 - Further troubleshooting may have found a cause to the problem where some users are getting duplicate events --- Outlook 2011 users, who have their class schedule automatically imported are seeing these duplicates in other clients (Outlook on the web, mobile devices, etc.). A case has been opened with Microsoft and detailed logging information has been provided.

Recently a case was open with Microsoft regarding a reoccurring issue where customers' events would be duplicated a numerous amount of times in their calendar, up to thousands. Microsoft believes it is another client causing the issue but the problem can not be easily reproduced in order to find a solution to the recreating events. As of now, there are currently two solutions we can provide to help resolve the problem.

If you do not have access to any Outlook clients, you can contact us to delete the duplicate events for you. To contact us, please refer to the following document:

Solution Through an Outlook Client

  1. Remove your account from all devices other than the Outlook client you will be working from. Below are other documents regarding how to remove your account from different clients and mobile devices. Review the documents and make sure you have removed your account from ALL that may apply to you.

  2. Next, you will need to make sure your Outlook client is properly configured. If your Outlook client is not properly configured please follow the steps provided in one of the following documents based on what version of Outlook you are configuring.

  3. Below are the steps for each outlook client to view your repeating events in List View to make deleting all of them much easier. Select which client version you have:

Outlook 2013 and 2010

  1. Open Outlook 2013 or 2010 and select the calendar tab on the bottom left.

  2. After opening the calendar tab, select the calendar that contains the duplicated events located on the left hand side.

  3. After selecting the calendar with the duplicated events, click the view tab on the top of the screen.

  4. On the top left of the screen, click Change View and then select List. This will put your calendar into List View.

  5. Once list view is active, select all of the repeated events using shift + click. When all of the events are selected, right click the list and click Delete. Important: Make sure you only have the duplicate items selected.

  6. After deleting all the duplicate items, quit out of Outlook. Log into the Outlook on the web and verify that the events have been deleted successfully. If you still see the duplicates, repeat steps 1-5 until the deleted events no longer appear in Outlook on the web.

  7. Reconnect your accounts after verifying Outlook on the web within your devices. For desktop applications please create a new profile. If you need assistance creating a new profile, please use the following document as reference:

  8. Note: If the deleted events are a class in your course schedule, you will need to contact us in order to re-import your class schedule.

Outlook 2011

  1. Open Outlook 2011 and select the Calendar tab located on the bottom left corner of the screen.

  2. After opening the Calendar tab, open the correct calendar with the repeating events. Click the Edit tab located at the top of your screen, and then click Find followed by clicking Advanced Find... .

  3. After selecting Advanced Find, a search bar should appear towards the top of your screen. Type the name of the duplicated event so all instances will be found.

  4. Once you have searched for all the repeated events, they will appear as a list below the search bar. Shift + click to select all of the repeated events in the list. After selecting all of them, Ctrl + click and select Delete to delete all of the events. Important: Make sure you only have the duplicate items selected.

  5. After deleting all the duplicate instances, quit out of outlook. Log into the Outlook on the web and verify that the events have been deleted successfully. If you still see the duplicates, repeat steps 1-4 until the deleted events no longer appear in Outlook on the web.

  6. Reconnect your accounts after verifying Outlook on the web within your devices. For desktop applications please create a new profile. If you need assistance creating a new profile, please use the following document as reference:
