Learn@UW - Potential Problems with Individual Survey Reports

You may encounter difficulties if you attempt to view or export an individual survey report as a .csv file if either the survey is long or many responses have been made.

Possible problems are:

  • There is no browser activity for several minutes.

  • An Internal Server (500) error occurs.

  • The report can be saved but not all of the data are included in the exported file.

  • A Javascript time out error occurs.

It is a known issue that viewing or exporting individual survey reports may be problematic if the report contains a large amount of data. The size of the report depends upon the number of questions, the number of possible responses to the questions, the number of responses made, and the dates included, if start and end dates are specified.

If you are unable to view or export a report that contains surveys submitted on multiple dates, you may be able to break the report into small enough parts by dates covered. For each part, specify start and end dates and check the boxes by From and To.

If a survey with no start and end dates specified can be exported but does not include all the data, try specifying start and end dates, check the From and To fields, and generate the report again.

Generate Report

For large classes, if you want to use individual survey reports, try to break up long surveys into shorter ones.

It is possible that you may be able to export an individual survey report even though attempting to view it triggers an Internal Server (500) error. Press the Generate CSV Report button to export the report and after several minutes, depending upon the size of the report, you may be able to save the report to a file on your machine.

In the past, we have received a problem report where an individual report for a survey with about 50 questions and 50 responses could not be viewed but could be exported after about a 4 minute wait after pressing the Export button. It was then found that the report was missing some data, but exporting the report again with specified start and end dates was successful.

It is also possible that you may be able to view an individual survey report even though attempting to export it triggers an Internal Server (500) error. Press the Generate HTML Report button to view the report and after several minutes, depending upon the size of the report, the report may appear.
