Windows Vista - Using the Search Function

The Search feature of Windows Vista allows you to search your hard drive for files. Note: It will not search through HTML files.

  1. Open the Start Menu by clicking on the Windows icon in bottom left corner.

  2. Enter part of the name or the entire name of the file you are searching for in the Search field in the Start Menu. You do not need to click on this field to access it, you can just start typing the name.

  3. Then click Search Everywhere.

  4. The Search window will appear

Advanced Search

Advanced Search functions similarly to the normal search, but allows you to narrow down search criteria by location, date, file size, tags, and authors. To access Advanced Search, click on the arrow next to the text Advanced Search.

If you did not find the file you were looking for initially, change location to Everywhere and search again. This search is more thorough and will take longer, but will look for any file with the name specified.
