Moodle - Upload limits

UW-Madison has adopted Canvas as its single, centrally supported learning management system. As of 6/1/2018, support for Desire2Learn (D2L) and most Moodle courses has been discontinued. Access to those courses has permanently ended. However, certain Moodle courses that are part of the Adanced Quizzing Content Functional Gaps project are still available on Moodle. Those courses are located on the Moodle Extension site.

This article explains the different upload limits within Moodle and provides best practices for uploading larger files

Upload Limits

UW Moodle's policy regarding upload limits defines the Site upload limit as 200 MB. This means that for every activity and resource within Moodle, the maximum file upload size is 200 MB.

Assignment Upload Limit

For the Assignment activity, there is an Activity upload limit of 20 MB (i.e. when a student uploads a file for an Assignment, the maximum size the file can be is 20 MB). If your students need to upload files larger than 20 MB, use a UW Box or UW Google Apps.

Options for Changing Upload Limits

Within your Moodle course, you can set the Maximum Upload size for your entire course that supersedes the upload limits of any activity or resource. To do this, first click on Course settings in the "Course Administration" section in the Administration block. Then on the "Edit course settings" page, scroll down to the "Files and uploads" section. Click on the dropdown box for Maximum upload size to change the upload limit to the desired file size (see image below).

For activities where students submit attachment files, instructors have the option to change the maximum size of submission file that the students can upload. The below image shows an example of changing the upload limit
