Rendering Equations Issues: Why Are My Equations Broken?

UW-Madison is adopting Canvas as the single, centrally supported learning management system, and discontinuing support for Desire2Learn (D2L) and Moodle. Access to D2L and Moodle will permanently end June 1, 2018. For information about retaining materials from D2L or Moodle, please refer to this document.

This article convers possible problems with math rendering on the new moodle sites.

Beginning with Moodle version 2.8, scientific notation and equations (e.g. integrals) written in LaTeX will be displayed by default using MathJax, a browser based rendering plugin. In most cases this results in a cleaner rendering of equations which scale with the browser window and better match surrounding text.  However in certain cases the added delay, or incompatibilities in TeX rendering may cause problems .  In this case an instructor can revert an entire course, or an individual activity to the older image-based rendering of equations.

To disable MathJax in your course:

1. Click on Filters in the Administration block

2. On the Filter Settings page, change the MathJax filter from "Default (On)" to Off.
Be sure to leave "TeX notation" enabled, as that is the image-based TeX rendering.
