Installing Ansys 16.1

The instructions to install Ansys 16.1 from the Ansys Customer Portal.

Note: To run tethered software, you must always be connected to the tethered software VPN, Engineering_ full VPN or Engineering_split VPN. For information on this, see https://kb.wisc.edu/cae/page.php?id=32730

Note: This is a teaching license and should be used only for demonstration and classroom instructional purposes. It cannot be used for research.


Navigation to Ansys Student Portal:

1. Register on the ANSYS Student Portal by selecting the link provided:
2. Click on student registration and enter credentials. (Account number is 243815. US country code is 1 before the area code.)
3. Select your affiliated professor from the drop down menu provided.
4. Now log in with your new account. (Username is the email you provided)
5. Select academic student software. (See picture)



6. Select the download tab. 
7. Select the version of Ansys Software you wish to download. (Current release is recommended)

Installation Steps:

Part 1 - ANSYS Academic Student Product Installation:

1. Extract downloaded installation files by locating the file (ANSYSACADEMICSTUDENT161_WINX64.ZIP) in the download folder. Right click on the file and select "Extract all". Either create a folder for the extracted files or select for them to download to the desktop. 
2. Run ‘setup.exe’ from extracted files. For a Microsoft Windows 7 or Windows 8 machine, right-click on ‘setup.exe’ and select ‘Run as Administrator’.



3. Click the ‘Install ANSYS, Inc. Products’ button.



4. Accept defaults, clicking ‘Next’ button to proceed through the installation.
5. “Specify the License Server Machine” window opens that will ask for the hostname of the license server. The CAE hostname is: license-3.cae.wisc.edu



6. After the installation comes to an end click ‘Next.’

The ANSYS Academic Student Product is now installed.

7. You can proceed to 'Install ANSYS License Manager' if you do not close the “ANSYS, Inc. Installation Manager” window.



If you proceed with the license manager installation, you can skip steps 1 and 2 below.
Should you happen to close the “ANSYS, Inc. Installation Manager” window, please follow all steps below.

Part 2 - ANSYS License Manager Installation:

1. Run ‘setupLM.exe’ from the extracted installation files. For a Microsoft Windows 7 or Windows 8 machine, right-click on ‘setupLM.exe’ and select ‘Run as Administrator’.
2. Click the ‘Continue’ button.
3. Click ‘OK’ when the warning appears regarding “License Manager Shutdown”.
4. Keep the default entries and click ‘Next’ through the install.
5. At the end click 'Exit' and the ANSYS License Management Center will open.

Note: You will only need to do steps 6-9 if you purchased your own license through ANSYS.

6. Save the license file you receive by email to your desktop.
7. In the ANSYS License Management Center, you will then click 'Add a License File'
8. Browse to your license file saved on the desktop and Click 'Install License File' when prompted.
9. The license file will be installed and the license manager will be started.You can exit out of the ANSYS License Management Center.

Remember to connect to the software/ Engineering VPN before running Ansys.
